Arkangel; is it really an angel?

“nothing in the world is purely dangerous(or harmful)”

From armed killer to a teacher meeting, there are many kinds of “dangers” we can encounter in our daily lives. In KMLA, because of its own background, we are actually encountering many different life-threatening situations in every single moment. While climbing up or running down those stairs, if we lose our footing, we will roll down and broke our neck. There are always great possibilities for us to meet those situations, however, are these dangers should always be the things we should always avoid? Or, can we do that in the very first place?

In the episode, mother of Sarah didn’t want any single dangers or threats to enter her daughter’s nerve, so she used the system named ‘Arkangel’, which has the role of blocking every auditory and visual sense of “harmful” contents from the person. This finally leads to the breakdown of the relationship between her and her mother, and through the episode, I found out two big problems of this Arkangel system.

First, Sarah couldn’t learn what they should know and deal with one day. This can be kind of extreme, so please forgive me. Sarah, while she is having health lesson, she won’t be able to understand it at all. Also, in biology class, she will get F grade in part of generative organs and body fluid. Sex and blood is not something harmful to know, but it is something one should know and get used to one day. Also, in that way, while she is taking an art class or cooking she won’t be able to use a knife or scissors so will have hard times participating. Those things which have the possibility to cause harm are actually the stuff we use in our daily lives. In other words, everything in our daily lives can be a weapon to cause harm. Just because of the possibility of harmfulness, is it not right to avoid it? That will make us hard not only to learn something we should get used to but also ruin our daily lives.

Second, she didn’t have the ability to handle very dangerous situations. This is because mosaic blocks her sense, and thus causes her to be ignorant about such situations. When Sarah saw her grandfather collapsed in her house, she couldn’t see his emergent situation and can’t do anything. Fortunately, her mother found out by receiving an alarm from Arkangel and came, so the problem was solved. However, this is totally taking away one’s problem-solving ability, and its side effect is even worse when a problem is an emergency. What if Sarah’s mother didn’t notice the alarm or was far away from her house? There’s no way to expect a little girl to notice her grandfathers is in a serious situation, because of her mosaicked view. Same for the case of stabbing her bleeding finger and hitting her mother’s head. If it wasn’t finger but wrist, she might have killed herself, and he actually almost killed her mother.

Although I’ve never stood on the footing of the mother, I totally understand her decision, wanting to make her world most loved one to live in a happy, joyful, and clean word without any disturbance. However, I’m not sure if it does better than harm.

  1. Pretty solid structure and clear path of questioning danger and how we actually need it. Rather than focus entirely on the episode, I'd like to see you branch out and connect your own experiences or those of Korean society.
